Piet Mondrian

Piet Mondrian (1872 - 1944) was a Dutch painter and an important contributor to the "De Stijl" art movement. He started as a landscape painter and ended up in developing the Neoplasticism, reducing compositions to the basic of form and colour. His famous way of Geometric Abstraction consisted of geometric shapes (especially rectangles) in primary colours and black lines on white ground.

Jackson Pollock

Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) was a major figure in the Abstract Expressionism and especially in Action Painting. He got famous for his technique of pouring and dripping paint onto a lying canvas. In the process of painting he used his whole body, which made him look like kind of dancing around. Pollock denied his paintings to be just "accidents". He usually had an idea about how the picture was going to look.

JibJab: He’s Barack Obama

"He’s Barack Obama" is an animated short movie, mixing drawings, photos, graphics, video, text and music. As a satire, it is basically meant to be witty, but in this case it is for sure also very good advertising for its producers.

JibJab is a company set up by the brothers Evan and Gregg Spiridellis. Since their start in a Brooklyn garage in 1999, they have grown to a 35-person company sited in L.A. Their business idea is to produce quality fun content which can be personalized, as for example eCards including the faces of your choice.

Allison Long: Transit

A while ago, I stumbled over the website of the Washington Printmakers Gallery, and over this shiny, fiery work by Allison Long. She used the monotype technique and worked additionally with a pen. It seems that light attracts my attention again and again. Allison Long currently lives in Owings Mills, Maryland, and this is her blog.

Minuscule

Created by Thomas Szabo and Helene Giraud, Minuscule is a French TV series about the experiences of insects in their wildlife surroundings. Whereas the insects are modelled in 3D, the scenery is real. The series is made for a wide audience but primarily for children. Its lack of spoken language is one reason for its universal success. But there’s plenty of sounds from ambient recordings to sound effects such as cars or helicopters. Click here to watch the episode "Catapult".

John David O’Shaughnessy: Dot Dash

"Dot Dash" obviously consists of dots and dashes. The shining colors make the painting appear rather optimistic. Especially with the impression of watching a town from bird’s perspective, I get a feeling of space within the picture.

John David O’Shaughnessy was born in New Brunswick NJ in 1964. He currently lives in New England.

Miguel Lasa: Polar Sunrise

Visiting the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition in Prague, I discovered this photography by Miguel Lasa. It shows a polar bear in the first rays of sunlight.
